'My best hobby is shopping!'
The way you shop is a reflection of your Financial Intelligence; hence, mindful shopping equals mindful living.
What does mindful shopping mean? It is simply thinking twice before buying anything; Is it necessary? Do you really need it? Can you do without it?
So when you are mindful, you are not buying anything to please anybody. You're not buying on impulse or because you have the urge to. You are buying because you need that item.
How can I be more mindful in my shoppings?
Separate Your Desires into Needs and Wants
You may desire an item; a yellow purse for instance. The question is, do you just want it or do you really need it? You can do without a yellow purse. Most of the time, spontaneous decisions are made at the point of purchase which makes it difficult to determine a need from want. To master this art of mindfulness, you must connect your desires to the purpose it serves if you must separate your desires into wants and needs. Once that is done, take time to ponder on the things you want to buy and determine if it is necessary before checking your box ☑️
Have a Budget and Stick to it
Before you decide your shopping budget, figure out your income and then budget for primary needs first; like your house rent, food and clothing. Have a weekly or monthly shopping budget and stick to it. If your shopping budget for the month is $400, ensure that you stick to it or even spend less. A lot of mobile applications have made this easy instead of carrying paper and pen around, you can have a notepad on your mobile phone where checking it becomes easier and faster. Don't allow anyone to lure you into excessive spending and purchases; have a plan and be specific in your purchases. Buying things in bulk is simply the best on this, it helps you save money in the market.
Have Specific Times For Shopping
You can be shopping weekly or monthly, whichever it is that works better for you. This will help you to prepare ahead and give the shopping the full attention it deserves. Shopping at specific times help you to establish a cycle or pattern of mindful living. So when you need anything, kindly add it to your shopping list so you don't forget it on your next shopping day.
Go For Quality and Not Quantity
Going for quality simply means going for durability, which in turn saves money in the long term. Invest in good quality items so you don't have to buy them again within a short time. If you are buying curtains for instance, look for shops that are known for selling good quality curtains. This will not just serve its purpose but will also last longer when you follow the recommended washing procedure. Also avoid wastage and ensure proper storage of quality items.
